About Girls on the Run of Silicon Valley
Girls on the Run of Silicon Valley was founded in 2002 by Kathleen Nestler and Christy Cowley. Both Kathleen and Christy grew up in the south Bay Area and wanted to share their love of running and the GOTR experience with the girls in their community. They started with one small group of girls at Lakeside Elementary School in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos and have grown the organization to include 440 girls at 21 locations for the Spring 2007 sessions. During the last 7 years almost 1800 girls have participated in GOTR programs in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties. This represents an average annual growth rate of 80%! Kathleen and Christy continue to coach and Kathleen oversees all programs and manages GOTR of Silicon Valley operations as its Executive Director. Girls on the Run of Silicon Valley, Incorporated is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
GOTR of Silicon Valley also organizes and manages a popular community 5k Fun Run each spring, where all of the girls in our programs come together to run with family, friends and their community. In 2007 our Fun Run attracted almost 1,000 runners along with 1,500 spectators to cheer them on.
